Recreating memories

Inspired by storytelling, Megan Kinney revisits shared memories in her art practice. She respects that these stories will always be in the past and cannot be recreated, but she aims to evoke the feeling of nostalgia.

Kinney’s artwork is an exploration of loss and what happens when you live in constant fear of what will inevitably occur. Loss, which is one of the most natural things we all go through, has led her to create artwork that centers on joy and grief. The two live in one house together. We grieve what is lost and what could have been. While simultaneously finding joy.

She creates multi-layered, collaged, relief paintings that grasp onto what is now gone. Her paintings are made by soaking canvas in gesso and are an exploration of the medium she is using. She goes against the traditions of painting on a flat surface- while still having the texture of canvas that she loves as a painter.
